This is the blog of our Early Childhood students at Wilkes Community College, Educational Technology class, Summer 08. It is a hybrid course meaning students do most of their work online, meeting only three times for an 8 weeks course. Most of us don't even know what a blog is or why we would use it. So here goes an experiment!

First I like to Hello,I'm one of the 5AG's viewers and I'm happy to help with this project :-)
I learn better when it's in steps and visually. That way I know what to do,bit by bit.
So the question of the week asked by Alan (Monday) of the fiveawesomeguys is
"How do you learn best? Are you a visual learner? Do you learn by reading? Do you learn by taking notes and writing? Do you learn by doing just going out there and... let me know."
The way I learn best is simply by talking it out, I just find a point that I can start a conversation on it and then respond to responses given back to me. This has proved extremely helpful when it comes to reviewing books that I have read for English and studying over history during lunch. Not in any real ordered form but just spitballing ideas and facts and fun little ways to remember tidbits for the material. [shamelessplug]This prompted me to start up noteduck.com which is jsut a forum for students to get things explained by peers because sometimes that is honestly what is needed, at no fault of the teachers.[/shamelessplug]

P.S. I will now also be vlogging after getting my computer back from a 3 month crash and loads of extra work so I will be making video responses to these questions as well. I will still type up answers and will actually probably integrate it into my revamped blog that will be back up and running in a few days. My youtube account is ChunkND and Noteduck (personal and for a project)
hey, i'm a huge fan of fiveawesomeguys, fiveawesomegirls, and the vlogbrothers so im happy to help!
well the subjects that i like the most are science/maths ones, and i find that i learn best in those subjects by understanding and figuring problems out myself, rather than a teacher just showing me the answer and saying "Learn that" .
Five Awesome Guys Viewer here.
I learn best when I teach myself via try and fail. Like when I taught myself some of the programming languages I know I read online, tried something, and banged my head against it till it worked. All it required was a good reference text and the internet.
Hello.
I think most people learn visually. When learning electronics, I had a hard time understanding the basics of how an oscillator works, but after given some additional help from a tutor who used a visual process helped me finally get it! The trick is to apply it yourself once you learn it so as it will stay with you.
Hello; I am in Ellen's Educational TEchnology class. (I answered this once, but didn't know where to place it; so here I go again.)
I think I learn best by a combination of these things. I learn by seeing and doing, even though I may sometimes have to see it done a few times; I learn by reading, writing and taking notes. It depends on what class I'm taking to what works best for me; but, I've found that it usually is a combination of all of these things. Sometimes though, it doesn't seem like anything works. That's when I need to take a break and come back to it later. It took me awhile to figure out where to go to do this assignment. I've tried it several times, but I hope I finally got it right this time. I've never been on blog before, and probably won't anymore after this class is over.
I feel that personally, I can learn anything if it interests me, or if it's going to be of use to me. From there, it really doesn't matter exactly how I learn it.
My best ways are visual. If I can see it, or read about it, I can figure it out. I'm really linguistic, and I have a good memory, so once a certain concept is repeated to me in class, and then at home studying, I can grasp it really easily.
And if I write something out, I usually understand it better, too. I'm a writer, and doing research for written projects really helps, or having to do a speech (as I really don't want to make a fool of myself...).
I'm really excited for this! It was a really good idea, and I'm sure the discussions are going to get really interesting.
I wish my teachers were cool enough to do something like this.
I learn by doing things and observing the outcomes of those things. That doesn't necessarily mean I have to do it physically, though. "Doing" things in my head and predicting the outcomes work just as well.
I learn best by doing. I prefer to experiment, try and find out how something works, and then have someone explain how it actually works. I find it a lot better, because later on when someone is explaining how it works, I know what they mean, as I've already tried to work it out. An example is when I learned to play the guitar. I just picked it up, and started playing random notes and chords. When I played two random notes in a row, and it sounds like it could be part of a song, I try and figure out the rest of the song by ear, and after I would go online, find out if I'm playing the right notes, and then learn the names of the notes, so that when I see notes for a song, I know where to put my fingers on the strings, rather than looking it up.
Hope this makes sense =] DFTBA!
wow..what a cool teacher! if one my professors happened to be a nerdfighter i would take every class he/or she offered.
...oh and im totally a visual learner..though im alsom a learn by doing kinda guy as well..
just a random 5ag fan/nerdfighter here
I learn best, if I first read the stuff, then write a presentation, take notes and then present the stuff from the notes. Although live audiences are best, the YouTube community would probably be ok if you force yourself not to edit your video.
Usually after doing so you cant forget the stuff anymore because the adrenaline burns it into your head.
Unfortunatelly this doesnt really work with vocabulary and grammar. Here the only method I know is to repeat - again and again. New/forgotten words/forms more often then old ones. PLUS: If I say the words aloud it usually becomes more efficient.
I'm also a 5AG viewer and a nerdfighter.
I learn by reading the stuff, but in my head I'm making a scheme to connect everything that I have learned. You have to find the connections if you want to learn alot. If you don't do that you will mix up the stuff that you have learned.
Hi! I'm Erika and I am in Ellen's class, Educational Technology. I learn best by going out there and doing. I just don't learn as well by just studying in a book. For example, in my Child Development class we first studied developmental milestones of children from reading the text, then I got to put together a portfolio for a child, and I learned so much more from that, than just reading it out of a book. So I learn best by seeing and doing.
I would like to say hello. I,m a hands on learner and This youtube business is new to me. I am working real hard to get the hang of it. I need a lot more of hands on and instructions.
I'm a big fan of the fiveawesomeguys! I think this project is an awesome thing.
I learn visually, but I also learn auditorally. I think that comes from me being a musician. I hate to read music (but if you're a musician, do it anyway, it's actually a great tool to be able to read music), but if I someone is teaching me the piece, I'd rather watch them play sections first and then follow that way. Learning auditorally has also helped me with my school work in the past - I used to make tapes of vocabulary words and definitions and listen to it a couple of times to help it sink into your brain.
Looking forward to more questions!
-Kristin
I am in Ellen's Educational Technologies class over the summer. I learn by seeing and doing. I feel that I am a hands on learner. I can be told how to do thing or read directions time and time again and still have trouble. Once i am shown how to do the task and do the taske myself I get the hang of it. I like taking my own notes in class to refer back to some how when i write the note by hand i tend to remember them easiers. - Nicole
Hey I am in Ellen's class also, I think I am more of a visual learner. I need to see what is expected step by step so that I can make sure that what I am doing is right. Also, when it comes to reading instructions to something. I do much better when the instructions has pictures.
